Wonderful coming of age story of a fascinating, self reliant young girl growing up alone. It is a story of love, abuse, betrayal, racism, and redemption, with the addition of a puzzling and somewhat suspicious death . It is also a lovely authentic look at the ecology of marshlife in 1950s North Carolina. ( I read the book on the Libby app, and found it useful to have an enlargeable marsh map available for reference using a separate browser tab.)
