The House of Night series by bestselling authors P.C Cast and Kristin Cast is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed. In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire--that is, if she makes it through the Change. Not all of those who are chosen do. It's tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

I love this vampire series because of the Native American component the author brings into the story line. Zoey Redbird's grandmother is deeply connected with her Native American roots which helps Zoey understand herself as a new vampire, and a very powerful one at that.

This was an amazing book and I love how you can see yourself as being Zoey! I totally recommend it!

sometimes it's really difficult to like Zoey, especially later on in the series. I started reading this series on Untamed but i went back and decided to read it over and i feel like the story loses a lot of key components as it progresses. i still love the series and would recommend it to anyone who's interested (:

The first book was interesting, but the rest of the series I'm DNF-ing because it is so shallow and filled with people who make unrealistically stupid decisions. Plus, Zoey is a Mary-Sue (too powerful, everyone loves her unless they are jealous of her, pursued by all kinds of guys, the chosen one for some reason, etc.) Also, the plot keeps getting additions that don't always make sense and feel kind of like filler. With the constant nonchalant sexual encounters and the ridiculous and poorly-developed story line, I feel like I read something written by a horny tween.

This book is outstanding! I was extremely addicted to this novel. I couldn't put it down! Zoey Redbird is a character very easy to relate to. (Well, not her powers. But her personality!) This is a must read for all of you who like Vampyre's (It's how it's spelled in the book) goddess's and powers. You simply get transported into the world of 'House of Night'!

It was alright. I definitely was hoping for a vampire series that was dark, but this wasn't. It was a bit more on the "sweet" side I guess, but the ending is definitely a cliff hanger.

This was a very interesting book. There were some scenes that made me laugh, some that made me cry, and others that made me want to scream. What more could you want in a book?

A fun read. You can tell this is the novel that sets the stage for the series, as it introduces in detail the world of vampyres Zoey now belongs to. Zoey's character is well written. And the writer weaves a great story.

SAPPHIREBEAR15 Jun 18, 2012

Sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird lives in a world where vampyres have always existed. New vampyres, called fledglings, appear through a biologic process that takes place in some humans, the Marked, at puberty and lasts four years. At the beginning of the book, Zoey is at school when she is Marked by a Tracker. As news spread, she is quickly deserted by friends and close family, who are part of an anti-vampyre group. She flees to her grandmother and on the way has a vision with the vampyre's goddess, Nyx who chooses her as her representative.
Zoey wakes up at the house of night in the presence of her grandmother and the vampyre headmaster- Who is also her future mentor, Neferet. She finds out that her Mark is all filled in, like that of an adult vampyre, a sign of the goddess' favor. There she quickly befriends her roommate, Stevie Rae, and through her, Damien, Erin and Shaunee. Zoey discovers that she has affinities for the five elements, air, fire, earth, water, and spirit, being the first in vampyre history.
Because of her uniqueness, Zoey also attracts the attention of the new High Priestess in training, Aphrodite. To humiliate her, Aphrodite invites her to a Dark Daughters ritual where she tricks her into drinking blood. Embarrassed, Zoey flees, it is then when she is chosen by a cat, whom she names Nala (because she looks likea little lioness). Shortly after Zoey finds a disillusioned Heath (her almost Ex-boyfriend), along with Kayla (her Ex-bestfriend) trying to bust her out (They were high and drunk),Kayla becomes annoying and Zoey threatens her, Kayla becomes frightened by Zoeys threat and leaves, at this point Zoey scratches Heath accidentally and drinks from Him and they Imprint. It is shortly after that she meets Erik Night and they soon become, friends, after a short kiss outside the girls dorm.

I wasn't at all sure I would like this young adult novel. The story of Zoey Redbird, a sixteen year old girl who is unhappy at home, becoming "marked" as a fledgling vampyre, just seemed a bit forced. I wanted to feel a part of her story but her angst was overwhelming and I couldn't really see where the plot was headed. However, about midway through, the book picked up steam and by the last few chapters, I was eagerly turning the pages in order to find out how Zoey's unusual powers would manifest and where it all would lead.

Marked is an imaginative take on vampyres, weaving "old" pagan religious themes throughout and incorporating ancient history into its background. I liked the idea of a society where vampyrism is openly known and accepted, and I liked the School of Night where fledgling vampyres are taken for further training. I loved Zoey's learning to accept herself and step up as a leader at the school, and even the cursing seems realistic. What I didn't like was the obvious prejudice against traditional religion, and the "mini-sermons" we receive early on against drugs, drinking, and oral sex from Zoey's point of view. I liked Zoey's friends but felt that her acceptance into such a tight group so immediately didn't ring true, and I had to wonder at just why Erik, the hot young vampyre, was so attracted so quickly to Zoey. There are also some very lucky coincidences, such as Zoey's Native American grandmother having taught her purification rites which come in very handy. Thankfully these annoyances were overcome by the general storytelling and the excitement of the last half of the book.
