Talk about unlucky sevens. An hour ago, seventeen-year-old, seven months pregnant Novalee Nation was heading for California with her boyfriend. Now she finds herself stranded at a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, with just $7.77 in change. But Novalee is about to discover hidden treasures in this small Southwest town--a group of down-to-earth, deeply caring people willing to help a homeless, jobless girl living secretly in a Wal-Mart. From Bible-thumping blue-haired Sister Thelma Husband to eccentric librarian Forney Hull who loves Novalee more than she loves herself, they are about to take her--and you, too--on a moving, funny, and unforgettable journey to . . . Where the Heart Is.

I picked this up at a time when I greatly needed a hopeful book. It really is, in spite of multiple tragedies. For a long time I wished that Willy Jack would disappear for good. In the end, their parallel stories turn out to be important. Novalee ends up with a true, if unconventional, family and a wonderful home for her daughter. While there's plenty of action in this book, it's really character driven. Novalee, and the other major characters, change and grow, which is what makes this a hopeful book. It's not preachy, but full of humor. The interesting names are part of the humor, and the dialog defines each person. I'll read more of her books.

Well written. You can feel the pain that the characters are going through.

This is not my normal read. I did like the story although the hope in it was hard to find at times. Novalee was able to overcome all that and stand tall in the end.

I liked this book, and the main character Novalee. However, in this book there were just too many back to back tragedies. It seemed as though this was experienced until the very last chapter. Overall, it was a good book and story, just squeezed my heart the whole time.

I read this book before the movie came out and fell in love with Novalee. Although a fictional character, when I need a push to keep going, I will pick this book up and remind myself that, "If Novalee can do it, so can I".

such memorable characters. Novalee Nation, Americus, Sister and Forney will remain in your heart long after you've finished the book.
