A BBC TV version of Cousin Bette. Well acted and rather fun. Rather similar to a Georges Feydeau bedroom farce. An easy-to-watch, pleasant production.

A fast paced sex addiction bedroom farce with French literary credentials.

Balzac must have had some diabolical mind to create characters either so devious and cold-blooded or so foolish and naive - as these in Cousin Bette. Well done all around but acting is much too hysterical. Production looks primitive compared to today's standards but that is to be expected since it was done in 1971. A very young and beautiful Helen Mirren is wonderful as the heartless Valerie, although a little overacted. Worth seeing.

Balzac's novel is a very good read, and this TV miniseries is a good adaptation. The actors do a good job, especially Margaret Tyzack as Bette. Sets and costumes are not out of the top drawer, but are generally fine.

Very interesting rendition of the book—much better than the version with Jessica Lange, by the way—one can “taste” Balzac’s idiosyncrasies. I loved the young Helen Mirren as the immoral, unscrupulous Valerie! And Margaret Tyzack was wonderful as the bitter, scheming Cousine Bette. It’s a 70’s production, but well worth watching imho.
