I really liked this book. The description of how history is investigated was very interesting, showing how what remains behind is interpretted, re-examined, reinterpretted, and maybe becomes closer to the truth, maybe not. Good characters, some surprises in the historical plot. Good writing.

Pretty good. The historical story was better than the modern day one but the two stories were woven together well.

Describing one of the villains:
"If the senator was a priest, he was a priest in the service of the Devil, if an ascetic, an ascetic with assassin's hands." p. 182
