The long-awaited first novel from Adam Lewis Schroeder. This sweeping story spans the years between the end of World War II and 1995, as Harry copes with the looming death of his wife, Lily. Lily has revealed an astonishing secret: the address of Michel Ney, the man who saved Harry's life in World War II before being killed by the Japanese-or so Harry had always believed. Can Lily be in contact with a man she never met, and why does she insist on Harry's reunion with him now? Harry journeys to Thailand, piecing together details of past years. What secret has lain between Michel and Lily for 50 years, and how can Harry prepare himself to accept it?Praise for Kingdom of Monkeys:"The textures and scents and colours--the otherness--of Indonesia, the Philippines, even 19th-century Singapore, shimmer on the page as if welling up intact out of distant memory." --Globe and Mail
Described as dark, funny and beautiful. I guess so. Not so sure. I would have to, more than anything else, call this "old-fashioned." Nonetheless a compelling read. Lots of good elements - love, history, intrigue, mystery. Not a page-turner for me.
