When I was studying music in college in the late 70s, I was introduced to this soundtrack. It opened my ears to incredible new sounds. Along with the familiar "Thus Spake Zarathustra" by Richard Strauss, and "On the Beautiful Blue Danube" by Johann Strauss, the recording includes many pieces by the 20th Century master composer, Gyorgi Ligeti. His haunting "Lux Aeterna" for voices, his microtonal "Requiem for Soprano, Second Soprano, Two Mixed Choirs and Orchestra," his ear-piercing "Atmospheres," and the groundbreaking "Atmospheres" definitely help make the film the experience that it was.
When making a film, directors will often use what is called a "Temp Track." This is usually previously recorded music that is similar to what the director wants the score to sound like. Stanley Kubrick asked the film composer Alex North (who had composed music for such films as "A Streetcar Named Desire," "Spartacus," "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf," and "Prizzi's Honor") to compose the score for 2001. Upon seeing the rough cut of the film, Mr. Kubrick liked the temp track so much that he decided not to use Mr. North's score. He did, however, pay Mr. North for his work.
What is so great about this release of the album is that it not only has the original release music, it also contains the complete versions of the music and a montage of dialogue from pivotal moments in the film. I know that Ligeti's music may be challenging to the average listener's ears. However, I think that if you give it a try, like me, you may introduce yourself to a whole new world of avante garde classical music to enjoy.
