The cold war is over, and Keith Landry, one of the nation's top intelligence officers, is forced into early and unwanted retirement. Restless, Landry returns to Spencerville, the small Midwestern town where he grew up. The place has changed in the quarter century since Landry stepped off his front porch into the world, but two important people from his past are still there: Annie Prentis, his first love, and Cliff Baxter, the high school bully who became the police chief of Spencerville and Annie's possessive husband. They're all about to come together again-and rip Spencerville apart with violence, vengeance, and renewed passion.

I first started reading De Mille's novels when I discovered his "hero" (protagonist) John Corey. A smart-assed retired street cop, Talbot got into one scrape after another, always successfully saving the world or some part of it from annihilation. Under his ministrations the bodies of terrorists and assorted bad guys began to pile up like cord wood.
So when I started to read Spencerville I was surprised, pleasantly perhaps, that this book didn't follolw in the tracks of the other DeMille novels
Spencerville has none of the outrageously over blown, over the top plot lines of some of the other novels. This novel is serious; it is realistic; it tugs at your heart strings; it is introspective; it is beautiful.
So far. But then, I'm not even a third of the way through.
So now I've finished the book and DeMille reverts to type. The paranoid, sadistic cop becomes even more so. Beyond loathing until finally at the end.... well, best not spoil it for you. Let's simply say you'll want to stay up late and read beneath the covers to finish this novel.
Gripping for sure.
