With an Introduction by Jane Urquhart

The is a remarkable magic in these eight matchless stories--stories set in Ontario, Australia, Europe; in dangerous mountains, forbidding wilderness, familiar towns. Things that cannot be explained happen here--and yet all seems inevitable, deeply credible and always profoundly true to the human heart.

Several of the stories have moments of great ambiguity and indistinctness in aspects relating to plot, and then they are slightly, but not clearly resolved. It makes them interesting to read and reread. I most liked "A Real Life", "The Albanian Virgin", and "Open Secrets".
