When an Orthodox Jewish man, a merchant in Jewish religious articles, is found shot to death under suspicious circumstances in Montreal, forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan is called in to examine the body and to figure out the puzzling damage to the corpse. Unexpectedly, a stranger slips her a photograph of an articulated skeleton and assures her it is the key to the victim's death. The legend on the back of a photo leads to the bones which are 2,000-year-old remains, allegedly found during the excavation of Masada by Israeli archaeologist Yigal Yadin, his associates, and volunteers in the early to mid-1960s. Her friend Jake Drum, a biblical archaeologist, thinks that these bones may be the bones of Jesus. Tempe travels to Israel to probe the origins of the skeleton and the ancient crypt in which they were found. Are the bones authentic, or are they part of an elaborate hoax?
