A terrorist is targeting Britain. And to make matters worse it's an "invisible"-- Mi5-speak for someone traveling under a British passport. Virtually impossible to find before it's too late.

The job falls to Liz Carlyle, the most resourceful counter terror agent in British intelligence. Tracking down this invisible is a challenge like none she has faced before. It will require all her hard-won experience, to say nothing of her intelligence and courage. Drawing on her own years as Britain's highest-ranking spy, Stella Rimington gives us a story that is smart, tautly drawn, and suspenseful from first to last.

Liz Carlyle works for the UK’s internal intelligence service, MI-5, and is on the case of an ‘invisible’ whose goals and actions must be dissected to keep a terrorist action at bay.

MPR’s Kerry Miller’s The Thread suggested Rimington’s female spy for summer reading. As a long-time fan of the TV series ‘Spooks/MI-5’’, I gave this series a try. I’m hooked!

I really enjoyed this novel. I appreciated its modesty, ie that it was a novel that did not go over the top with extravagant action. Knowing that the author was the previous head of MI5 may have given me a degree of confidence that the story had a strong sense of being based in reality. The heroine Liz Carlyle is a realistic figure and the other characters reeked of British traits and eccentricities. I look forward to reading more of Rimington's novels.

Entertaining first novel from the former MI5 director, pitting two unusual terrorists against a group of operatives and police in the English countryside. Rimington gives the appropriate amount of detail and has a good sense of pacing throughout, and her main character Liz is a strong woman with depth. I'll continue to read her later books.
