2008 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNERPeter Matthiessen's great American epic–Killing Mister Watson, Lost Man's River, and Bone by Bone–was conceived as one vast mysterious novel, but because of its length it was originally broken up into three books. In this bold new rendering, Matthiessen has cut nearly a third of the overall text and collapsed the time frame while deepening the insights and motivations of his characters with brilliant rewriting throughout. In Shadow Country, he has marvelously distilled a monumental work, realizing his original vision.

At least The Great Southern Novel, may be The Great American Novel. I say this as a southerner steeped in Mr. Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty, Harry Crews, Barry Hannah, et al. A history of the south from the end of the Civil War to the Great Depression, through the life of Edgar Watson. And the irony is that it's written by a New Yorker.

It is not a cosy read, and will challenge every reader with the harsh reality of our complicated past. From no other story or history I've read has the oppressive nature and persistence of racism been so effectively, stunningly portrayed. This tale will never leave you.

A great book. Very descriptive language. A great insight into the customs and attitudes of the time period.
