As World War I raged across the globe, hundreds of young women toiled away at the radium-dial factories, where they painted clock faces with a mysterious new substance called radium. Assured by their bosses that the luminous material was safe, the women themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered from head to toe with the glowing dust. With such a coveted job, these "shining girls" were considered the luckiest alive--until they began to fall mysteriously ill. As the fatal poison of the radium took hold, they found themselves embroiled in one of America's biggest scandals and a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights. The Radium Girls explores the strength of extraordinary women in the face of almost impossible circumstances and the astonishing legacy they left behind.

This book had me driving along (I listen on my commute) with my mouth literally hanging open in utter indignation. The author does such a fabulous job of bringing these women to life out of history that it makes you just squirm in your chair to hear about the pain they endured as a direct result of their criminally negligent employers. These courageous women deserve to have their stories heard! I'll admit to not much liking the narrator, but I got used to her voice after a chapter or two and it certainly didn't impact my enjoyment of the book.

I had to stop listening to Radium Girls. The narrator seems inexperienced or distracted or something, with pausing in the middle of sentences where there should be no pauses. It's a shame because I waited for this book to become available for several months.

I've so wanted to read this book, but the narrator of the audio cd is absolutely painful to listen to. Sing-songy, pedantic, and just plain grating. Awful to contemplate spending 16 hours, nearly half a work week, with that. Sad, but I'll have to wait until after eye surgery to see if I can read it instead. Really disappointed.
