"Semi-retired private detective Molly Murphy Sullivan is suffering from depression after a miscarriage following her adventure in San Francisco during the earthquake of 1906. She and her husband, Daniel, are invited for Christmas at a mansion on the Hudson, and they gratefully accept, expecting a peaceful and relaxing holiday season. Not long after they arrive, however, they start to feel the tension in the house's atmosphere. Then they learn that the host couple's young daughter wandered out into the snow ten years ago and was never seen again. Molly can identify with the mother's pain at never knowing what happened to her child and wants to help, but there is so little to go on. No ransom note. No body ever found. But Molly slowly begins to suspect that the occupants of the house know more than they are letting on. Then, on Christmas Eve, there is a knock at the door and a young girl stands there. 'I'm Charlotte,' she says. 'I've come home'"-- Provided by publisher.

Loved the 'ghost' aspect of this story and how it all turned out in the end! Looking forward to reading more in this series!

My first Rhys Bowen - a gentle historical mystery with a nod to Canada.

I've been enjoying these Molly Murphy mysteries and I did enjoy this one too. I thought a stronger story than some of the Murphy mysteries...really enjoyed it. I thought the ending was a little too much like "Hallmark Channel" mystery movie, but, again, I did enjoy the book. Looking forward to the next one in the series.

Rhys Bowen delivers #17, in the Molly Murphy, mystery series. Molly sets out to spend a quiet Christmas with her family and ends up instead involved with murder mysteries, kidnappings and family reunions. This is a quick, fast read that gives you all the things you expect of Molly Murphy.

Molly is coping with a miscarriage and the impending loss of Bridie, her ward. Bridie's father and brother have survived the building of the Panama Canal and are planning to reclaim Bridie and return to Ireland. Molly has been helping her mother-in-law recover from an illness, while Daniel has been helping the founder of the Secret Service with investigations. Mrs. Sullivan has taken in an orphan named Ivy as a maid, and is apparently planning to educate her as she did Bridie. Christmas was supposed to be spent with Mrs. Sullivan, but she receives an invitation to spend Christmas with an old friend. Molly's friends, Gus and Sid, are going to be away. It looks like a small Christmas with just Molly, Daniel, and Liam, their son, and Bridie. Then suddenly Daniel's mother's friend invites all of the Sullivans. When they arrive, however, there is a strained atmosphere. It is revealed that the daughter of the household disappeared on Christmas Eve ten years previously. Molly offers to investigate and persuades Daniel to help. The recruiting of helpers includes Gus and Sid, who it turns out are at a nearby inn. The family secrets that are uncovered do not contribute to a jolly Christmas, but the details of daily life and Christmas in the early 1900s are very well done. This is definitely a cozy mystery suitable for a comforting Christmas read.
