Mildred Pierce is a happily married woman with two kids, living in the suburbs of sunny California. She secretly takes a job as a waitress so that she can pay for piano lessons and expensive clothes for her eldest daughter, Veda. Her growing financial independence permits her to open her own restaurant, and eventually a chain of eateries. She has divorced her intolerant first husband, and married well-connected Monte in order to get Veda into high society. Greedy, self-absorbed Veda is still ungrateful, and demands an even greater sacrifice of her mother. Eventually, Mildred finds herself ensnared in the world of police and suspicion when Monte is mysteriously murdered.

VERY GOOD 1945 b/w film noir starring Joan Crawford, and a fine performance by Ann Blyth at 17 years old as her troublesome daughter.

Does have darkish film noir styling with great lighting, drama, etc.

"Mildred Pierce" is a full-fledged classic, with Oscar-worthy performances all around, and production values to expertly match - the writing is not only brisk but unexpectedly witty, the editing superb, and the direction everything you would want from a murder mystery - don't bother with the recent series with Kate Winslet, a yawn, this is the "Mildred Pierce" to watch

Epic. By the time this film was over I was emotionally & almost physically exhausted from watching this sweeping drama. Joan Crawford is at her tearful best as a woman who is a hard working mother trying to please a daughter whose selfishness brings destruction to those who care for her. In a way this movie felt like 3 films in one due to the plot & pacing. A treacherous ride of a film & worth every moment!

This is a 1945 American drama film directed by Michael Curtiz, based on the 1941 novel "Mildred Pierce" by James M. Cain.
This film reminds me of the seemingly "love-triangle" murder that took place in 1958.
Cheryl Crane, the daughter of Lana Turner stabbed Turner's lover Johnny Stompanato to death.
I wonder if Cheryl Crane watched the film.
I find similarity between the film and the case, although a coroner's inquest concluded that Crane had acted in self-defense.

Joan Crawford worked hard for this role and nailed it -- and deservingly earned her only career Oscar for it. I loved the twists and characters James Cain threw in the story... Eve Arden and her quick one-liners; Ann Blyth's 'Veda' (one NASTY spoiled rotten brat). Directed by "Casablanca" maestro Michael Curtiz; this is definitively classic in every respect. FIVE STARS.

Released in 1945 - This "rags-to-riches" Joan Crawford vehicle is a classy Chick Flick (about a devoted mother who goes to the greatest lengths to satisfy her selfish, snotty, teen-aged daughter). It packs a considerable-sized bite when it comes to its dramatic story-telling._____ Tears. Joy. Tragedy. Betrayal. Revenge. Mildred Pierce's well-crafted story immediately pulls the viewer into its tangled web of deceit and double-crosses. And it retains that compelling grip right through to its final, climatic twist-ending._____ Filmed in b&w, Mildred Pierce featured a first-rate cast headlined by Jack Carson and Ann Blyth._____ Joan Crawford's performance as the title character won her an Oscar for "Best Actress"._____ This picture was adapted from the novel of the same name written by James Cain whose other notable works included - Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice.

Classic film noir adapted from a dime store novel. Joan Crawford won a Best Actress award for her perfomance. Mildred Pierce's daughter was played to perfection as well, ie, a spoiled rotten brat. A must see for anyone interested in the upcoming HBO remake starring Kate Winslet. Supposedly the HBO version will be even more sinister and steamy.

Iconic Joan Crawford. "Mommie Dearest" is nothing more than a smear. This a must see for all daughters with mothers and mothers with daughters, and all film buffs alike.
