"Jack Parker knows all too well how treacherous turn-of-the-century East Texas can be. His parents did not survive a smallpox epidemic. His grandfather was murdered. Now his sister Lula has been kidnapped by a criminal who may believe wearing a dead man's clothes protects him from death. With bounty hunter Shorty, a charismatic and cunning dwarf, and Eustace, a gravedigging son of an ex-slave, the heartbroken young Jack sets off on an epic quest to rescue his sister from the corrupt men who control much of the new territory. In the throes of being civilized, East Texas is still a wild feral place. Oil wells spurt liquid money from the ground, but blood and redemption rule supreme"-- Provided by publisher.

It reminded me of "True Grit" with an East Texas twist that only Lansdale could dream up. Very few writers do dialog as colorfully and as interestingly as he can. I really liked this book - it was a fun adventure.

I would call this a western -thriller- tall tale. We start with lots of death and violence and it just keeps going. The language is so colorful and entertaining that there is actually quite a bit of humor. The violence is graphic and over the top almost to a comic book level with the way people get injured and just keep going. Also, lots of sexual violence. Fast paced, action packed adventure.

Lansdale is a great American writer. These books (his stand-alones) will be read 50 years from today. One of the best books of its year. If I were on the Pulitzer committee, this would have won it. Pure Americana.

Kept me guessing. Loved the characters. Would be a great movie. Highly recommend.
