Scratching a livelihood out of the stunning but harsh Scottish terrain, the Guthrie family cowers in obedient fear of its brooding patriarch, a man prone to sudden and ferocious bursts of anger. As Guthrie's long-suffering wife retreats into silence, attention shifts to his daughter Chris, a beautiful and intelligent young woman divided between her hatred for the coarse people in her village and her love of the landscape. Chris dreams, as does her brother Will, of freedom and escape. The first comes suddenly. The second is more complicated: the arrival of handsome young Ewan Tavendale into her life brings happiness, only for it to be disrupted by the Great War.

I waited since 2014 for this to come out after reading on BBC/Scotland that it was in production. It was slow (even by my patient standards.) I wasn't enthusiastic with the portrayal of Chris, the long-suffering dutiful daughter to an brut of a father; Mullen played his part to perfection; the husband was fairly well played by KG, but I agree with a previous review his story was poorly developed on this point of going to war, what it did to him.

Nearly an entire generation of men was lost, millions died during the war and returned home with horrid physical & mental wounds people did not understand. In the last 5 years there have been many films finally exploring this subject. The Imperial War Museum in London is an excellent place to visit for a simulation of this specific war.

When I read this years ago it was a labor, but now I feel LGG & his Socialist beliefs were so evident in his writing. The land endures, so many Scots even today carry this belief almost as part of their DNA. For those who've walked the paths, the land gets under your skin, one becomes attached to Scotland in a very strange way. I've come to appreciate this lament.

Slow, lyrical, "I am glad I didn't live in that time" movie.

Slow and painful to watch.

This film is very beautiful to look at, but is disappointing in some ways. For example, the way in which the war brutalizes Ewan is not portrayed convincingly, nor is Chris's understanding of his actions.

Action fans. Skip this film. You will not like it. Trump fans. Skip this film. You will not like it. I would rather you not see it and then write inane half star commentaries. Master film director Terence Davies had to wait ten years before he got financing to make this new film.
