Called "a fantastic breakthrough into the dark content of female desire" ("France-Soir"), this has become the most controversial book on sexuality since "The Story of O." Millet gives a graphic account of a life of physical gratification, and a relentlessly honest look at the consequences of sex stripped of sentiment.

There are a lot of reasons to read this book, titillation being only one of them. A male reader might be astonished by one example of a woman's experience of sex, how extraordinarily different it is from a man's. A woman reader will find relief, forgiveness and compassion for her sexual self, for all the ways she thinks she has failed, that her body doesn't work right, that she shouldn't have been bored by it. All open readers will find that Millet is writing about, and experienced much more than a lot of unusual sexual encounters.

"..but as far as I can see, there is a balance to be sustained between the acquisition of moral and intellectual qualities that earn the respect of your peers, and a proportional excellence in practices that flout these qualities, brush them aside and deny them."
"...in the same way that psychoanalysis helps you shed unwanted parts of yourself...The more detailed my descriptions of my body and my actions, the more I leave myself behind."

For some maybe just checking it out of the library and reading it in public, or leaving it unhidden on the table is liberation.
