Uprooting his family after being assigned to a remote testing facility in Alabama, nuclear engineer Hank Marshall is faced with a moral decision as an opponent of the atmospheric tests he's asked to complete. Adding to an already volatile situation is Hank's sultry and unstable wife, Carly, whose flirtatious nature begins to erode their relationship and bring unwanted attention to the situation.

Released in 1994 after the death of director Tony Richardson three years earlier, it's hard to believe that one of the father's of the British New Wave -- LOOK BACK IN ANGER, A TASTE OF HONEY, THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER, TOM JONES -- made this stale, stiff picture. It's remembered mostly for Jessica Lange's Oscar-winning performance as Tommy Lee Jones' batty wife. The non-crazy-housewife part of the screenplay is interesting. The military was resistant to the atmospheric test ban of nuclear weapons; and when the testing did move underground, it continued to vent dangerous levels of radioactive material into the atmosphere. Tommy Lee Jones' character is an Army major/nuclear engineer with a conscience. Sadly, the interesting parts of the story get lost in Jessica Lange's pyrotechnics. Powers Boothe is good as the lecherous, amoral base commander. The look of the picture is horrible. There is something splotchy, glaring and flat about a lot of the movies made n the late 1980s/early 1990s. BLUE SKY is an excellent example.

This is one of the greatest performances I have ever seen by Jessica Lange. She truly deserved the Academy Award. She nailed every emotion she was sexy, vulnerable, serious, funny ....amazing performance.

I saw this film some years ago, and must say most of it has faded away except for Jessica Lange's performance as sensual and crazed Carly Marshall. One could debate about whether she deserved an Academy Award for it, but she deserved some kind of award for the sheer, overwhelming Jessica Lange-ness of it all.

eminently forgettable - a slow year for the Oscars, which gave one to Jessica Lange for best actress, yawn
