"With charm, humor, and deep understanding, Monica Sone tells what it was like to grow up Japanese American on Seattle's waterfront in the 1930s and to be subjected to "relocation" during World War II. Along with over one hundred thousand other persons of Japanese ancestry--most of whom were U.S. citizens--Sone and her family were uprooted from their home and imprisoned in a camp. Her unique and personal account is a true classic of Asian American literature"--Publisher.

A young Japanese-American girl grows into adulthood during pre-war and wartime America. Beginning on Skidroad in Seattle where her father owned a successful hotel, through internment with her family on the Puyallup Fairgrounds and in Minidoka, Idaho and then on to Southern Illinois for college, we follow her life through warm, funny, and poetic insights into her everyday life as a Japanese-American. We see the difficulties and the funny incidents of blending the cultures of Old Japan and new America. The reader will realize the injustice of internment and marvel at the way Kazuo and her family and the other internees accepted their situation and continued living with hope, humor, industry, patience, courage and continued ties to their family and community.
Beautifully written, interesting, and funny and filled with a warm humanity. I really enjoyed this book.
