One summer in New York City, thirteen-year-old Mister's hard-living mother is arrested by the police, leaving him and nine-year-old Pete to survive alone while dodging child protective services and the dangers of the Brooklyn projects. The resourceful Mister nevertheless feels he is an unstoppable force against seemingly unmovable obstacles. But what really keeps the pair in the survival game is much more Mister's vulnerability than his larger-than-life attitude.

A well done movie. I enjoyed the portrayals from all of the characters. Jennifer Hudson was great, and the two boys that played Mister and Pete was amazing. A heartfelt and touching movie!

Love this movie. Definitely something to watch with preteens and teens who want to grow up to fast rather than be a kid. It made me mad, sad, and cry.

The Inevitable Defeat of Mr. & Pete was written by Twin Cities screenwriter Michael Starrbury. He is now one of the creators, executive producers, writers and voices for Legends of Chamberlain Heights, a Comedy Central animated series. The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013. It is good and features strong performances, particularly by the two young leads. It is difficult to watch at times. Given the story line, the run time probably should have been closer to 90 minutes. The film is rated R for language, some drug use and sexual content.

The kind of film where you can't help the constant tears, and once you think they've stopped they start up again. Incredible, emotional film demonstrating a mixture of innocence and resilience.

I watched the highly acclaimed Japanese film, 'Nobody Knows (誰も知らない) 2004." which was on a bunch of children left to their own devices in a small Tokyo apartment. This is just as breathtaking with super acting and credible script. The deleted scenes are must watch as a few of them provided clarity on loose ends and assurance to those of us who care on what became of the two boys.

Wonderful movie of friendship, survival, support and growing up against the odds.

One of the worst, overwrought, unrealistic and insipid movies I've ever seen. Fast forwarded through most of the movie just to see a predictable and quite sappy ending. Not recommended.

I could not imagine how horrible the life would be for impoverished children with mothers who prostitute themselves to support their drug addictions until watching this.

The assignment:
Teacher: I want you all to write about what you did this summer, okay? I want you to be as detailed as you possibly can. Make it at least one page long, okay? And I want you to take the whole period to do it. If you took a trip this summer, I wanna know about it. I wanna know where you went, who you went with. Anything you remember. Think about the last three months. As much as you can. What did you do, say, on the 4th of July? Okay, did anybody in your family have a birthday? Are there any good books that you read this summer? ..
The teacher saw but failed to see why:
Teacher to Mister: I know it's hard, Mister, but maybe repeating 8th grade is exactly what you need. When you were offered after school help, you refused it. That's... That's fine. That was your right. We can't force it on you, but now you have to accept the consequences of that choice. I can't pass you. But I am willing to do what I can to help you.
It's plain to see that you need it.

But Mister was all alone!
Cop: Keep your head up, son. What are you? 13? 14 years old? Keep fighting. There ain't no ceiling for a kid like you.
Mister: I can't do it alone.
Cop: What's that?
Mister: I can't do it alone.
Cop: None of us can.
The soul mates.
Mister: I'll be back for you.
Pete: Promise?
Mister: I promise. You're strong, Pete. Don't let anybody punk you. Got it?
Pete: I got it.
Mister: I'll see you soon.
Mom: You just know everything, don't you? Don't you? I do what I do 'cause ain't nobody gonna help me. They never have. They never will. ...Mister, take Pete and go.
Mister: You're disgusting. I wish you would just die already.
Mom: At least we have that in common. Take Pete and go.
