Interest level: ages 4-8. Young Elmer Elevator rescues a baby flying dragon from Wild Island, using only his quick wits and a few things he brought from home. This exciting yet gentle story is a perfect first chapter-book read-aloud.

A cute adventure story that is perfect for children that are transitioning into full length books. I read it with my 5-year old son and it was a hit.

As my four-year-old and I get into chapter books, we chose to start with this one. There are occasional pictures (which helped sell him on the chapter book idea) but the book is mostly words.

It is a wonderful story! Filled with adventure, and very fast moving, the boy goes on a rescue mission with the hope of getting to fly with the dragon. He encounters many wild animals along the way, which gives the reader a chance to do all sorts of voices. The sentences are not long or complex but still interesting. Also, the chapters are quite short, so it's easy to put down and pick up the story.

My. 6-year-old granddaughter loved this book, insisted hearing it cover-to-cover, then requested it several more times.
She liked following the action on the map.

A quick, silly read to share with preschoolers-grade 3. I'm not a fan of how the animals of Wild Island are described as mean, stupid creatures obsessed with killing the "invader" and abusing their enslaved dragon. Not an animal-friendly or compassionate story, in spite of the ending.

Wonderful tale to encourage readers to use their imaginations to delve into adventures and a world of fantasy. *Comical at times and very entertaining. *Great escape for the summer. *Fascinating way to encourage readers to enjoy leisure time reading, just reading for entertainment.
