Marva Munson is a spry, elderly woman who is looking for a tenant for the spare room in her house. Goldthwait H. Dorr moves in and gains Munson's permission to use the basement for rehearsals with his "medieval music ensemble." Dorr is masterminding the robbery of a riverboat casino, and the fellow musicians in his ensemble are actually the crew he's assembled to pull off the job. Despite their best efforts, Munson finds out about their scheme and Dorr decides the best solution is to silence her permanently.

Silly, but it's a Coen Brothers movie.
On Special Features is about making the instruments.

That most refreshing thing, a remake that is equal to the original! The characters have a distinctive bent away from those in the earlier piece, which stirs the pot nicely. Tom Hanks at his comic best.

It took me a while to figure out exactly why this movie doesn't work - despite the superb acting talents of Irma P. Hall and Tom Hanks. I reached the conclusion that the humor is too forced. The antics of Dorr's crew of misfits is too over-the-top. Too much of the story line relies on Pickles the cat and the feline just isn't up to the task. The Coen Brothers do have a great sense of humor but it works far better in those movies that aren't comedies, such as "No Country for Old Men".

Horrible. I watched thirty minutes of this total waste of a movie. The writing is terrible with the F word substituting for an attemp at dialogue. Tom Hanks must have been high when he agreed to do this. He is the only noticeable actor, the rest are nobodies. Skip it, see the original.

Funnier than I expected it to be, I’d say the Coen Brothers overall do a fine job putting their own spin on this story. And, for connoisseurs of renaissance music and bathroom humor (like myself), this also has the best Sacbut joke I’ve ever heard!

It was O.K for a home movie.. But it was NOT worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box.

I discovered this movie at the library and I've borrowed it several times. I'll likely buy it soon. It's hilarious. The only criticism I have is that they over-used swaring, and even though it makes sense for the characters who are criminals, they overdo it at times. I watched the original film and I still like this one better.
