This book really ought to be called Mr Show-Off. Mr Clever has made some very clever gadgets and lives in Cleverland, so that makes him pronounce himself the cleverest person in the world. Once he leaves Cleverland, he runs into a series of characters who ask him questions he can't answer and show him that he's not that clever after all.
I don't like how popular culture tends to present intelligence as a negative trait, so I wish that Hargreaves would have chosen a different trait for his character to show off about. Regardless, the "don't show off too much; nobody knows everything" message is a good one.
