Concluding a powerful and groundbreaking five-season run, "Boardwalk Empire" is an Emmy-winning HBO drama series from Academy Award nominee/Emmy Award winner Terence Winter and Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese. Season 5 begins in 1931, a full six years after the end of Season 4. In stark contrast with the Roaring '20s, the country is in the throes of the Great Depression, and with the end of Prohibition in sight, Nucky is looking to legitimize himself by forging alliances with liquor producers. Season 5 also includes flashback scenes of Nucky, Eli, the Commodore, Gillian and others from 1884-1900 - childhood experiences that would shape their relationships and their futures.

I loved the series but the 5th season was disappointing. Only 8 episodes (I assume rating were low) so they had to wrap up a GREAT show in a short amount of time.

This season is 7 years beyond season 4 so a few of the main characters have died in the interim and Prohibition is on its last legs. It seems that the main impetus of season 5 is to kill off everybody and make us feel that all these seedy characters were victims of their upbringing (especially Gillian and Nucky). To that end, flashbacks are a constant and annoying feature that could have been better used thoughout the entire series rather than as a last ditch effort to cultivate some sort of crocodile tears from the audience.

Seasons 1&2 - 4.5 stars
Seasons 3&4 - 4 stars
Season 5 - 3 stars

Well done conclusion to a well done series. The ending has been done before, but I didn't see it coming. Steve Buscemi is excellent.

Almost all dogs have their day in the final season of the latest deeply racist,HBO Gangster drama TV series.

The series was so well done !
Sorry to see it end.

P.S. My NYPL version of Season 5 contained a fourth Disc ,
...which had two episodes of "The Knick",
(which seems to be a series ?)
about a NYC hospital in 1900.
Strongly realized reproduction of the city, and a couple of very interesting dramas about the development of medical history.

Does anyone know anything about this series?
The NYPL has no DVDs for "The Knick".

Didn't realize that this is the final season until the most unexpected end, which also explained the emphasis the always somewhat enigma Gillian in the sanitarium. Super writing and crime drama of the bad old days.

Margaret to Joe Kennedy: But they're already selling behind your back. You could sell yourself. Unload your entire position, then sell short along with my client ... Investors such as yourself often keep accounts under assumed names. Cash out in one, sell short in another. Who'd know better than a senator? ...They'll bail completely and an hour later Mayflower stock will be in the dumper. Then you and my client buy back, closing the short position simultaneously. Which is all perfectly legal.

Capone: History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme...

Maranzano: I do not take such things personally.
Nucky: What's more personal than a man trying to kill you?

Nucky: There's no sense looking back. The only thing you can do is start again. I really believe that.
Chalky: We ain't school boys no more.
Nucky: We're not dead either. That leaves a lot of road in the middle.
Chalky: Maybe you just don't see the end of it.”

Torrio: Masseria. Got his wake tomorrow. Joe the Boss. Richest man in the cemetery...

Nucky: Year in, year out - different dogs, same fxxking bone.

Joe: ... Besides, if you only help people to help yourself, what kind of world would it be?

Narcisse: What I have belongs to me.
Thug: People are losing things all over. Some guy, he's a millionaire, next thing you know he's sellin' Chiclets in the street.

Lucky: What do you want? Nucky: A meeting so we can settle this bullshxt.
Lucky: I'll meet you at your funeral. We can talk there.”

Season 5 was a disappointment. I couldn't wait to get to the end so it would be over. There were way too many flashbacks of the star character as a boy, and then another character playing Nucky as a young man. This young man was just painful to watch as the show dragged on and on. I had to fast forward through the flashbacks just to get to the end to see if Nucky was going to die for the conclusion of the series.
