A young nun charged with talking an anorexic out of her religious fanaticism toys with the thin distance between practicality and blasphemy. A strange bond between a teacher and a schoolgirl takes on ever deeper, and stranger, shapes as the years progress. A bride-to-be with a penchant for nocturnal bondage can't seem to stop bashing herself up in the light of day. Equally adept at capturing the foibles and obsessions of men and of women, compassionate in her humour yet never missing an opportunity to make her characters squirm, fascinated as much by faithlessness as by faith, Lynn Coady is quite possibly the writer who best captures what it is to be human at this particular moment in our history.

I ripped through this one. Only "Clear Skies" disappointed. The other seven stories were interesting, dare I say "gorgeous" 😉

** spoiler alert **
This shouldn't take long to read as it's a pretty short book. But I'm going to write my short little reviews of each story as I read them so I don't forget what I want to say.

WIRELESS
This one lost me, what was the point of her not meeting the family or the point of her feeling guilty and not going but buying touristy pictures to make up for it?? And what did that have to do with her being a drunk?? I didn't get it.

HELLGOING
This is worrying, I feel like I'm not understanding. The story is going one place and then abruptly changes in the last 2 paragraphs so I wonder what it meant. But I have no clue.

DOGS IN CLOTHES
Maybe I'm not supposed to understand, though this one is more than annoying, what did the author do and what did she figure out??

TAKE THIS AND EAT IT
Oh, I like this one. An acerbic nun who doesn't seem to like anyone despite working in a hospital. I like her and her impatience.

AND OTHERWORLD
Another good one, interesting take on the past affecting the present. It's curious how the bondage aspects are fit into the story, like it's the outcome of their past relationships.

CLEAR SKIES
I like how this story slowly rolled out her past and the reader has to infer so much of it. Though it did feel a little passe as the news has not been filled with stories of polygamist societies much in the last few years.

THE NATURAL ELEMENTS
This wasn't as appealing. A father and teenage daughter argue about everything and a woman in a rental house alone both serve to confuse and exasperate the father, who worries.

BODY CONDOM
Even in a Cube, driving on the Island is not so bad that you must concentrate so hard, that's just ridiculous. I want to know what happened between father and son, I don't want to infer it, it's so annoying and yet, these are really good stories.

MR HOPE
This one is a bit sad, to watch a girl decide to be nothing. To be knocked up at 15 and to find someone who thinks she could have done better.

On the whole I really liked this collection, despite the lack of comprehension, I still liked all of them. Take This and Eat It was my favorite though.

good slow read with women's touch. Will try another book.

Readable, but not recommendable. Almost all of the stories are ambiguous, without resolution. If you do decide to check it out and become fatigued, the story: The Natural Elements is worth reading ... otherwise, the rest can probably be skipped.

Hell Going -
I struggled with this book of short stories and only got about half way through it before I gave up. It was too depressing!
The title is apt! I put it on my 'completed' list nonethe less.
Perhaps it is too 'modern' for me - I am a senior.

Great stuff. Very contemporary. Wondeful writing. May not be everyone's cup of tea, but I feel Coady reflects what's going on underneath a certain "normalcy" in society today. Glad I didn't pay attention to other reviews here.

Well it's Canada's year for the short story. HELLGOING is the winner of the 2013 Giller Prize for fiction.
