This is the first of the author's books that I've read. Will definitely do some catching up with the rest of this series.

The fight in the Park when Kate comes home from a summer of commercial fishing is over whether to allow gold mining near town, with the price of gold up. While she was gone, she got elected to the Ninilta Native Association, and elected chair. She didn't want to be on the board, to say nothing of chair, and bungles badly the first meeting. Things go downhill from there when an opponent of the mine is murdered at its headquarters. Johnny, newly 16, runs into a man who gave him a long ride when he ran away from his mother and came home to the Park. The man wants a job, but is using a different name and asks Johnny not to tell. This doesn't seem odd to him, and Johnny doesn't think to tell Kate, especially when the PR person for the mine is killed too. Not my favorite Stabenow because of its coincidences, but right up there. Johnny is beginning to come into his own in this one.

Stabenow's latest book in the series lives up to the standard she has set in previous books. Stabenow keeps conjuring up new and interesting situations to place Kate in and Kate's relationships with other park rats keep developing in unexpected and pleasing ways. A must read - but read the previous 15 first!
