The characters' lives are linked to each other by acts of generosity or cruelty. A daughter in early 20th century Chicago; a hobo during the Great Depression; an office girl in 1950s Manhattan; the young man reveling in 1960s San Francisco, then later tends to dying friends as the AIDS pandemic hits; as the new century opens, a man who has lost his way finds a measure of peace in a photograph he discovers in an old box-an image of pure and simple joy that unites the themes of this work.

I am a huge fan of David Rakoff, and this may be his finest work. The simplicity of the meter and rhyme scheme, which is reminiscent of children's poems or light verse, belies keenly observed stories that are alternately heart-rending and -warming, all delivered with Rakoff's signature humor. I read the book when it first came out, but like most poetry, it's most enjoyable when hearing it read by the author.

Impressive emotional novel of intertwined characters, all told in sing-song verse (think of the phrasing of "'Twas the night before Christmas"). Amazing that author recited the whole book just before dying of cancer, though his voice often struggled to get the words out.
