Listen to a man practically unknown here, but more popular than Elvis in Australia and south Africa. This is one of two albums, and after watching the documentary "Searching for Sugarman," I wanted to hear more of his music. Yes, still relevant, nice voice and lyrics. A worthy listen.
By now, the story of Sixto Rodriguez is well known, thanks to the award-winning documentary "Searching for Sugar Man," which tracked him down and increased his visibility. I guess the real question then is how is the music? "Cold Fact" is his 1970 debut and only one of two albums he released (a third was never completed). It does seem a bit like a bridge between the optimistic folk of the 60s and the more introspective, melancholy singer-songwriter stuff of the 70s. There are bits of Dylan, Nick Drake and Donovan, but he has a style all his own and I think fans of 60s music will enjoy this. Two of his signature songs, "Sugar Man" and "I Wonder" are on this reissue.
