Inspired by actual events, writer/director Craig Zobel's sophomore feature Compliance examines the complex hierarchy of authority through the experiences of a teenage fast-food restaurant clerk who falls victim to a twisted practical joke. Becky (Dreama Walker) is doing her best to get through another tough shift when a man claiming to be a police officer calls to speak with her stressed-out manager Sandra (Ann Dowd). According to the man on the phone, Becky has just stolen money from a customer, and likely still has the cash on her person. When Becky denies any wrongdoing, the man on the phone insists that Sandra detain the frightened girl in the back room of the restaurant, an action that sets into motion a shocking sequence of events.

Was forced out of my ‘theater’ at home (pretended to walk out). One-trick pony times a lot. Waste of Ann Dowd and Pat Healy who are good actors. >>> This domination/exploitation by each other is our ‘Matrix’ reality; I think the film maker thought this truthness would carry a film by itself. Maybe he could have Warhol-ed US with a brilliant conception, but, no….. >>> some may have watched the whole movie because that’s what you do with a movie

My thanks to commenter dschan below for their info on Louise Ogborn. Before doing that search I didn't/couldn't believe this had any basis in fact. *UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE* Quite the thought provoking topic -- unquestioning obedience to society's 'authority figures'...

The story seemed unbelievable, the phone call boring. Who just answers questions without knowing the identity of the person asking? I fast fwd the movie and did not finish watching. After reading the comments, maybe this did happen???

Don't watch this if you are easily disturbed. A brave and stellar performance by Dreama Walker, who plays a young, minimum wage, fast food worker accused of theft by someone on the phone who claims to be a police officer. I find it hard to believe this could really happen as I think most half-way intelligent people would question when they were told to do things like this, but found out that this happened 70 times over a ten year period across the country. And while some parts of the movie, I hope, were sensationalized for dramatic effect, it shows how easily some people can be led to do some of the most despicable of things. A commentary on our time, when some self-proclaimed authority says what to do and how to think, it leaves one feeling very, very angry and very, very helpless. Wake up, Sheep!

Disturbing and difficult to watch. A basic tenet of the law states innocent until proven guilty, and I think every is familiar with that. Also in a litigious society rife with lawsuits, it is hard to fathom that anyone would simply comply with ludicrous instructions over the phone, yet this type of travesty occurred 70 times in 30 states IF the film is truthful in that claim. Technology and video cameras, phone records et al guarantee that criminals aren't difficult to trace and the law holds them responsible for the consequences of their heinous actions.

Good movie, hard to watch at times knowing that this really happened. I was shocked at how far things went.

this was a good watch, it is hard to believe that this really happened, that people are really that stupid to listen to someone on the phone telling them what to do. I would have said, "ok if you are really a cop, then come here and arrest me, because I didn't do anything and you will soon release me as there is not evidence against me." Sandra's boyfriend was obviously simple minded and deserved to be arrested for what he did.
