I was disappointed by the movie. If it were only trying to be about some 1970s radicals that are found out today and how their discovering makes them have to reconsider the decisions they made back then, it would be OK. However, it is clearly about the Weather Underground who were a group of violent radicals who wanted to "bring the war home" in response to their disdain for the Vietnam War. Following their activity that included bombings of buildings and associated casualties, the group dispersed and went into hiding. In history, it is a compelling story and well documented in the documentary "The Weather Underground" (2002). This movie, on the other hand, is light on information and instead tries and fails to create real drama by following around an all-star cast playing the former radicals. A beat reporter is onto them. He finds each of them and interviews them. Each of them spills beans and then says, "This is off the record." Are you kidding me!? Robert Redford (who also directs the movie) plays one of the former radicals on the run. Ironically, back in the 1970s, Redford played in one of the best movies about reporters uncovering a story when he played bob Woodward in "All the President's Men" (1976). None of the insight from that experience was brought to this movie. It is good to see older actors like Redford, Susan Sarandon, and Julie Christie on screen, but someone has to get them some better material. And that's on the record.

This is a 2012 political thriller produced, directed by and starring Robert Redford.
The script was written by Lem Dobbs based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Neil Gordon.
The story centers on recent widower and single father, Jim Grant, a former Weather Underground anti-Vietnam War militant wanted for a bank robbery and murder.
As an attorney in Albany, New York, Grant has hidden from the FBI for over 30 years.
He becomes a fugitive when his true identity is exposed by Ben Shepard, an aggressive young reporter.
Although the performances of the actors appear superb, the story itself is too complicated to understand at once.
The script is ill-contrived for the sake of complexity.
It should've been much simpler or stream-lined for the audience to understand.
The apperance of an older daughter is completely out of line.
The story seems good but nobody could make a good movie out of a bad script.

I liked the idea of a fast pace thriller spanning 30 years and actually having some thread to historical reality ... and not being too outlandish. It is a good story whose characters seemed like they could be real.

Student radicals of the 1960s who went the whole route, went underground and 30 years later re-surface to face the consequences of idealism carried too far. Excellent movie.

Rated 7/10.

This is good for a while, but soon gets boring and predictable and finally (thank God) dies an agonizing death.

I don't understand all the criticism about this movie? So what if Redford's character is a father of an 8 year old at 70??--It has happened!! It's a solid story, totally believable, and well done all around. Supposed to be taking place in Albany New York and the Mid West USA--actually filmed in Fort Langley--Maple Ridge---and Vancouver BC---Great flick!

Jim Grant: Secrets are a dangerous thing, Ben. We all think we want to know them, but if you've kept one to yourself, you come to understand that doing so, you may learn something about someone else, but you also discover something about yourself. I hope you're ready for that.

Jim Grant: I thought he died.
Donal Fitzgerald: Yeah we all died. Some of us just came back.

Ben Shepard: These people, they're all nuts, but none of them are illogical.
