Calgary: A New Illustrated History examines ten themes as they were experienced in Calgary's history, interpreted through carefully-chosen images and detailed captions that go beyond the ordinary scope, revealing associations and relationships about personalities, places, and phenomena. The themes include: arts, culture, and recreation; the built environment; diversity and social change; economy and industry; education; law, order, and safety; life and death (i.e. health, health care, death and burial); media and communications; politics and administration; and transportation and infrastructure. The author draws upon his quarter century of original research in Calgary's archives and libraries, including careful reading of early city newspapers and examination of archival photographs that have not been scanned and included in online catalogues or databases. The author relates many of the images to the location where they were created and what lies there now, offering readers a sense of time and place as it relates to this city. Readers can find new insight and even pride in Calgary's long history of cultural life, diverse ethnic and religious heritage, economic development, and responses to adversity, discrimination, and outside influences that determined the shape of Calgary's story.
