Add a CommentThis novel deals with issues that draw it perilously close to being a movie from the Lifetime channel: problems maintaining the land of ancestors, fatal disease, abusive boyfriends and romantic complications. What redeems it is the quality of the writing which creates characters both unforgettable and recognizably human.
The trio of female friends is what forms the core of this book, all of them different and all endearing or exasperating in their own way. All three of them possess their own share of problems and deal with them in ways that ring quite true to their characters.
This isn’t a typical romance novel by any means; there’s plenty going on here beside love affairs. With various futures left to uncertainty as the novel finished, I was pleasantly surprised to find there was a sequel. I didn’t require one and felt the novel could have been left to end on its own, which is a tribute to Ms. McDaniel’s satisfactory writing.
