Your worst nightmare is his dream come true....

A relentless debut novel filled with cutting-edge forensic and investigative detail, Birdman marks the arrival of a uniquely talented writer.

Detective Jack Caffery--young, driven, and seemingly unshockable--catches a career-making or career-breaking homicide in his first case as lead investigator with London's crack murder squad.  A young woman's body has been discovered, dumped on wasteland near the Millennium Dome site in Greenwich, England. It's the most brutal degradation of the human form that the squad has ever uncovered. Caffery's well-deserved reputation is that of the most stoic of detectives, but his initial inspection of the corpse will forever sear his psyche.

One by one, four more corpses are discovered only steps away from the first. Five bodies, all young women, all ritualistically murdered with cunning precision. And when a postmortem examination reveals a singular, macabre signature linking the victims, Caffery realizes that he's facing the most dangerous offender known to the force: a sexual serial killer.

In the murky recesses of his own mind, Caffery harbors the haunting legacy of a loved one's slaying.  What baffles him is that not a single missing person's report has been filed for any of the five young women. How has the Birdman chosen these seemingly perfect victims?

Now, as he employs every weapon forensic science can offer, Caffery knows that time is running out before the killer strikes again, and that he must put away his tortured past in order to safeguard the Birdman's next prey.

With refined craft and beguiling imagination, Mo Hayder is certain to skip the hearts of the most demanding readers of crime fiction.

(The first book in the Jack Caffery series)

Strong suspense and detailed characterization make this an exciting read. Birdman will shock you from start to finish and will appeal to fans of thrillers and horror. With elements of the macabre and torture, this is not for the squeamish or those who are bothered by disturbing content! As the debut for detective Jack Caffery, it was so thrilling I cannot wait to read the next book in the series, although less graphic content would be better.

Read with your lights on
Very good, very creepy writer, especially for a debut. DON'T pickup if you have a weak stomach. NOT for the faint of heart. Well-written horror, real horror in an almost everyday sense, not supernatural. Twisted and grisly, it may seem to some that that is all there is but Jack Caffery knows there is more to it than a simple psychopath. He is an excellent character that I look forward to shaking hands with...good mysteries abound in this novel.

There were moments in the book that approached the border of what might be called "torture porn." A very difficult book to read given the relentless horror and misery that originated in the darkest of hearts. I finished the book, though, because I liked Jack Caffery, a hero who had to face his own personal demons. Mo Hader's prose carried me forward on a literary journey to the edge of hell.

NOT for thin-skinned, nightmare-prone readers... this story became progressively weirder and quite violent. Author has an imagination when it comes to types of crimes. Sometimes I felt the motivation wasn't well explained. Overall it was original in a quite twisted sense. I'll try another by Hayder...

It was not bad for a first book and the plot was okay. Hayder simply has to find her rhythm and hopefully she'll write in a style that makes the rest of her books impossible to put down

Women are being murdered and strange items are found with their bodies leading detectives on what may be a wild goose chase. This was really good and I loved the twists!

Started kind of slow, but picked up rather quickly. The author guides us to a mid book normal conclusion but she throws us a curve ball that just leaves us stranded in the middle of a desert wondering where this is going. The pace is fast. The end is a bit weak, but all in all a good book (her first). Recommended. I can't wait to pick up another Hayder book.

The writing is good but too graphic and grisly for me.
