In a small prairie town like Argue, Saskatchewan, everyone knows everybody else's business. Everyone knows that the Loney family has been barely hanging on - the father, George, reduced to drink and despair since the loss of his farm and the death of his wife, Margaret. And that the four Loney children do not get along with George's second wife, the pious, bitter Effie. When George dies in a drunken stupor and Effie takes off with a traveling Bible salesman, it looks as though the children are done for.

A powerful, touching, unforgettable and dark story written in verse. Heavy but amazing.

Very moving, beautifully written. Interesting stylistic device in which each character speaks separately, commenting on the action. Similar in that way to Maeve Binchy's wonderful story, The Lilac Bus.

In 1941 Argue, Saskatchewan is struggling to emerge from the Depression. After Margaret Loney’s death, her husband George marries the rigidly pious Effie to help raise his four children. But with little support from the alcoholic George and embittered Effie, the children must ultimately fend for themselves, battling not only poverty but the often narrow-minded and hypocritical attitudes of the townspeople. They also find affection and help, often in unexpected places, including the intervention of a guardian angel – but, while a world at war opens new horizons for the Loneys, it also threatens their very survival.

Written in verse that reads like personal letters, I’ll Be Watching is beautifully written, a moving, rich and suspenseful novel of hope, perseverance and the power of family ties. If you liked Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, you’ll love this tender and gripping novel.
