An eventful life of a writer/man with a number of women, booze, lucky and unlucky events. Good acting. A representative of the 20th century? Doesn't sound much but not a bad miniseries.

Waste of a first-rate cast and scenery!

It's as if the BBC wanted the world to know that not absolutely all the boys from those exclusive English public schools notorious for 'fagging,' as authors Roald Dahl and before him, Robert Graves, described it, were immune to heterosexuality. Tiresome huffing and puffing by actors, who probably hate each other's guts, simulating the rutting of goats. Gave it up when the boring adulteress Freya rolled up. Audiobook based on the same William Boyd novel a vast improvement.

A great epic story put to the screen by Masterpiece Theater. Entertaining, informative as well as touching; great acting and story. Highly recommended. (6 hours).
I'd like the read the book too.

I enjoyed this Masterpiece 4 part mini series based on a novel by William Boyd and highly recommend it. A beautiful production with period settings and props and clothing spanning almost a century and venturing into multiple countries and continents. The acting and direction was exceptional. I was hooked after the first 15 minutes!

Very British and lovely to watch. It covered the long life of one man starting in his late adolescence. There is family, love, work, sex, heartbreak, loneliness, wealth, poverty, royalty, war, art, mystery, friendship, tragedy - everything you would find in any human life!

Three different actors played the main character and they were all excellent. His life is defined to a certain extent by the women he knew over his 85 years - and some he loved!

There are quite a few sex scenes that are a bit overdone at times and the length and detail is not always necessary to get across the love and passion and lust. Not a lot of violence or gore - a few unsettling war scenes.

Wow. This blew me away. Other viewers have commented there's a lot of sex, which is true, but this is a great watch-a-like for fans of "Downton Abbey."

My Goodreads review:

Way to much sex, if you live with anyone you don't want to have walk in during a sex scene, just don't get this. This movie opens up with boys trying to get laid, then showing the main character masturbate, before having extremely graphic sex scenes.
I ended up having to abort within the first 40 minutes, as watching an over glorified porno is quite uncomfortable when you're sitting next to your mother.

Starting out as a somewhat interesting soap,.. it soon becomes a tedious repetition of sexually exploitive (but Britishly subdued) relationships and the emotional emptiness that results. I skipped the last disk. Wish I'd stopped sooner.

It's unusual to come away from a film with such a comprehensive understanding of a character, of a life. Excellent casting--Jim Broadbent is especially wonderful as the old man looking back, taking stock and coming to accept himself, warts and all.

Long, drawn-out soap opera in which an elderly second-rate writer reviews his many romantic conquests and fewer friendships by means of endless flashbacks. The series offers mild character development and human-interest value, but on the whole it's nothing to write home about.
