The Myths of "green" Energy and the Real Fuels of the Future

The promise of "green jobs" and a "clean energy future" has roused the masses. But as Robert Bryce makes clear in this provocative book, that vision needs a major re-vision. We cannot-and will not-quit using carbon-based fuels at any time in the near future for a simple reason: they provide the horsepower that we crave. The hard reality is that oil, coal, and natural gas are here to stay.Fueling our society requires more than sentiment and rhetoric; we need to make good decisions and smart investments based on facts. In 'Power Hungry', Bryce provides a supertanker-load of footnoted facts while shepherding readers through basic physics and math. And with the help of a panoply of vivid graphics and tables, he crushes a phalanx of energy myths, showing why renewables are not green, carbon capture and sequestration won't work, and even-surprise!-that the U.S. is leading the world in energy efficiency. He also charts the amazing growth of the fuels of the future: natural gas and nuclear. 'Power Hungry' delivers a clear-eyed view of what America has "in the tank," and what's needed to transform the gargantuan global energy sector.

Robert Bryce may be a lobbyist for the fossil fuels industry, but that doesn't make him wrong. What is abundantly clear is that without the subsidy of massive feed-in tariffs, the wind turbine industry would fold like a three dollar tent. If legislators force the utility companies to buy all the electricity wind farms can generate at enormously inflated prices, it's a gold mine at the taxpayers expense. Boone Pickens is a shrewd businessman, if someone offers him free money he'll take it. Even when other renewable sources such as biomass, solar, geothermal and tidal power are added to the mix, they are still too intermittent to meet America's huge base-load energy demands, and that situation will never change. The Green movement is brainwashing gullible people into wishful thinking; they're brilliant at evangelizing but can't do the math, so it's open season for huge scams like corn-based ethanol. As John McCarthy said: "Those who refuse to do the math are doomed to talk nonsense. Robert Bryce is a voice of sanity who debunks the people who talk nonsense.

Robert Bryce works for the Conservative think tank Manhattan Institute, what a joker!

Always helpful to read on the background of an author and the financing. The history and current funding of the Manhattan Institute is hilarious, there's Big Oil, Chemical, and Weapons money everywhere!

Slimey indeed.

This is a great book. It was fairly easy to read and explains very well why most of what passes for green is merely wishful thinking that ignores many hard realities of physics and economics. Since the green energy debate is heating up with Obama's latest announcement on green energy, I would highly recommend this book in order to ground one's opinion in reality.
